hello? is there anybody out there?

”Okay can you please run that by me again Dr. Notsogoodwithconsciouspatients?”

“I mean, I need you to come see my patient. She’s crying. I think she’s really sad. Maybe she’s depressed or something.

“Did you ask her?“

“Uh……”

“What’s the clinical question here?”

“Come on, dude! It’s 3am! Can’t you just come and talk to her??”

I mean, yes, of course I could. And since I was a resident on psych consults, I did. Because I was already rudely awoken by someone on ortho who had a “scary” crying patient.

Eye rolls aside, I want people to feel better! Just like you do! And that’s why we’re here doing this mental health thing.

  • Was I super frustrated to be paged in the middle of the night from my comfy, cozy single bunk in the resident room?
  • Were my hospital provided scrubs that said “stolen if removed from property” 2 sizes too big?
  • Was the crying ortho patient really depressed?

Actually, no, not the specific patient in this case.

But I did not hesitate to take the opportunity to help my confused ortho resident figure out how to come up with a better consult next time! (And he seriously owed me a coffee. Or 5.)

But why should you care Reader?

Well, because sometimes you have questions for your client’s prescriber and you don’t know exactly what to do.

Or maybe you’ve tried reaching out before and gotten nothing but crickets.

Or even worse, they got back to you but were rude (I know, some doctors can be douchey)!

I can’t help with the last one but I’ve got you when it comes to getting the answers to your Clear, Clinical Questions!

Today’s video was based on a request from a therapist who described a series of lacking psychiatrist responses when she needed answers to help her clients!

This video has some clear ways to make sure your note gets read, your call gets scheduled, and you get what you’re looking for!

Plus there are some Google Doc examples if you wanna copy them for your own use!

I have a dream that together we’ll build bridges between all of us mental health professionals and the people who see and need us. (And how fun is that? Yay!)

When prescribers and therapists work together we can pass the benefits of collaboration on to our clients and patients.

And I want you to feel comfortable and confident reaching out when you need answers.

We’re on the same side!! Let’s do this together to ensure the people we work with are getting the best results they can.

Will my tips and tricks work on everyone?

Nope.

But they’re pretty darn good and super easy to try!

And speaking of collaboration, I’m in Maryland right now meeting with a psychiatrist I mentioned regarding neurofeedback, Dr. Hogan Pesaniello.

What a great time we’re having!! Can’t wait to share all the cool stuff I’m learning and how it will help the people we take care of!

Cheers to healthy brains,

Dr. B

Dr. B Jessica Beachkofsky talks about interoception, trauma, and the DMN

This holiday season feels weird to me. I've been trying to figure out why, but I'm still not really sure! A lot of people may feel bad at a certain time, or in a certain place, and not really know what's going on. In some cases, it's due to the process of interoception which is one of my very favorite concepts to explain to patients!! This is where the body is taking in all the data it gets from the environment outside AND internally and then decides what to do next. In the context of this...

Dr. B Jessica Beachkofsky MD wonders about the safety of supplements

A gorgeous Charlize Theron is walking through the water along a sandy beach wearing a gauzy, sequined dress wrap thing. It's very sexy. There are almost no words spoken. J'adore by Dior.... sigh. Years ago (this was a tv ad from 2016!!) I asked for perfume for Christmas. Which was silly of me because I was in the military and worked in a hospital ward. NO perfume allowed! And with 2 tiny monsters at home it's not like we were going out anywhere that sweatpants or my camouflage uniform wasn't...

Dr. B Jessica Beachkofsky talks about confusion over perimenopause symptoms vs normal aging

What do brain fog, leaking pee, broken bones, and irritability have in common? Perimenopause! Whether you have/had a uterus and are somewhere between 30 and 60, or you have a client or know a person meeting those requirements, this video is for you! (Psst. There's no way you get out of this one!) Every single woman that makes it to 55+ will go through menopause and at least 75% of those people will have at least one annoying (or awful) symptom of perimenopause. And those symptoms may start as...
